Eugene Chan

American baritone Eugene Chan is quickly becoming one of the leading artists of his generation. He garnered critical acclaim when he stepped in with less than 24 hours notice to sing Orff’s Carmina Burana at the world-renowned Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducted by Bramwell Tovey, in July 2008. Mr. Chan has performed in many of the major cities throughout the world in repertoire that include’s the title role’s of Don Giovanni and Eugene Onegin, Papageno (Die Zauberflöte), Il Conte Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro), Danilo (The Merry Widow), Schaunard (La bohème), Albert (Werther), Mr. Gedge (Albert Herring), Gasparo (Rita), Ottone (L’incoronzione di Poppea), L’Horloge Comtoise/Le Chat (L’enfant et les sortilèges), and Dancaire/Morales (Carmen). He has performed with many prestigious international theaters and organizations, most notably San Francisco Opera, Opera Theater of St. Louis, Shanghai National Grand Theater (China), Theater Basel (Switzerland), the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the San Francisco Symphony, among others.

An avid recitalist, Mr. Chan made his Carnegie Hall debut under the auspices of the prestigous Marilyn Horne Foundation in January 2008. He has been featured as soloist with some of the world’s leading orchestra’s in repertoire that includes Orff’s Carmina Burana, the Fauré Requiem, Copland’s Old American Songs, the Brahms Requiem, Vaughan Williams’ Songs of Travel, the Charpentier Te Deum, the Dvořák Te Deum, and Ligeti’s Aventures & Nouvelle Aventures.

Recent highlights include his Italian debut as Dandini in Daniele Abbado’s production of Rossini’s La Cenerentola with the prestigious Teatro Comunale di Bologna in Italy. He returned to Theater Basel in Switzerland both as Il Conte Almaviva in the revival series of Le nozze di Figaro and for a role debut as Prince Yeletsky in a new production of Tchaikovsky’s Pikovaya Dama. He also made recital appearance’s for San Francisco Opera’s prestigious “Schwabacher Debut Recital Series” and the Marilyn Horne Foundation’s Annual Series “The Song Continues”at Carnegie Hall.

Mr. Chan holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Sacramento State University and is a graduate of the Theater Basel OperAvenir, Seattle Opera Young Artists Program, Music Academy of the West, the Steans Institute at the Ravinia Festival, OperaWorks!, and San Francisco Opera’s Merola training programs. He has received top prizes and awards from the Premio Spiros Argiris International Competition, the International Umberto Giordano Competition, the Washington International Competition, the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, the Liederkranz Foundation, the Igor Gorin Memorial Award Fund, Houston Opera’s Eleanor McCollum Competition, the Marilyn Horne Foundation and the William Matheus Sullivan Foundation.
