John Paul Huckle, Bass, is a native of Pittsburgh, PA. In the 2010-2011 season, John will be joining the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Teatro Regio in Torino as the top prize winner of the American Berlin Foundation Scholarship. This summer Mr. Huckle will be performing the role of Sparafucile at Lyrique-en-Mer/Festival of Belle-Île in France. This past year he was pursuing a Professional Certificate in voice from the Boston University Opera Institute studying with Sharon Daniels. He performed the roles of Simone in Gianni Schicchi and Olin Blitch in Susannah with the Opera Institute this Spring. While with the Opera Institute, Mr. Huckle has performed the roles of Chucho in William Bolcolm’s one act Lucrezia, Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor, and Olivier in Tobias Picker’s Therese Raquin. An avid performer of opera, Mr. Huckle has performed over 25 roles. Before coming to Boston, Mr. Huckle received his Batchelor’s degree, Master of Music, and Performer Diploma, all from Indiana University under the tutelage of Dr. Robert Harrison, Mr. Timothy Noble, and legendary bass Mr. Giorgio Tozzi. While at Indiana, he performed quite a number roles such as the Commendatore, Pistola, Friar Laurence, Hobson, Sarastro, the Count des Grieux, and the drunken gardener Antonio. As a young artist, Mr. Huckle attended the programs of Central City Opera, Tulsa Opera, Utah Festival Opera, Opera North, Brevard Music Center, and the Sarasota Opera. While at Sarasota Opera, he received the distinguished Leo Rogers Outstanding Apprentice award. During his time with these companies, he has covered and performed roles such as the Mikado, Zuniga, Rambaldo, Il maggiordomo, Jacob, Theseus, Il servo di Doge, Sciarrone, Angelotti, and Bottom. In 2007, Mr. Huckle made his professional debut as Sparafucile with the Cleveland Opera.
