Enjoying a 25-year career as a stage performer, Dean Anthony has quickly established himself as a Stage Director on the operatic scene with his gritty, energetic, and physical productions of TOSCA at Florentine Opera, Anton Coppola’s SACCO AND VANZETTI with Opera Tampa, RIGOLETTO, CARMEN, AND MARRIAGE OF FIGARO at St. Petersburg Opera, THE MERRY WIDOW and BARBER OF SEVILLE at Opera on the James, MAN OF LA MANCHA, SWEENEY TODD, LA TRAGÉDIE DE CARMEN, and HANSEL AND GRETEL with Augusta Opera. As the Resident Stage Director & Director of Production of Shreveport Opera since 2009, Mr. Anthony directed and produced MAN OF LA MANCHA, LA BOHÈME, TOSCA, MADAMA BUTTERFLY, MANON LESCAUT, LA TRAGEDIE DE CARMEN, DON GIOVANNI, AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS, THE FANTASTICKS, and FACE ON THE BARROOM FLOOR.
In the summer of 2008 he joined David Gatley as the Assistant Director of the Brevard Music Center/Janiec Opera Company summer opera program specializing in Acting and Movement. Directing productions of ELIXIR OF LOVE, THE THREEPENNY OPERA, SUOR ANGELICA, and TINTYPES. He was also the Artistic Director of the newly formed Diamond Opera Theater in upstate New York producing and directing THE MEDIUM and THE FACE ON THE BARROOM FLOOR. His unique and one-of-a-kind Master class series based on Movement and Acting for Young Singers has lead him to Nashville Opera, Florentine Opera, Virginia Opera, Shreveport Opera, Festival Lyrique de Belle Ile en Mer, University of Texas, Texas State University, University of Wisconsin Green Bay, Centenary College, Brevard Music Center, Astonia Music Festival and Central Methodist University.
As a character Tenor, Mr. Anthony was often referred to as “The Tumbling Tenor”; He created over 90 roles and was highly praised as a character artist for his vocal, dramatic, physical and acrobatic abilities. In particular demand were his portrayals of the roles Puck in A MIDSUMMER NIGHTS DREAM, Little Bat in SUSANNA, Curley in OF MICE AND MEN, the Witch in HANSEL AND GRETEL, Pong in TURANDOT, Bardolfo in FALSTAFF, Beppe in I PAGLIACCI, Pedrillo in DIE ENTFÜHRUNG AUS DEM SERAIL, Sancho in MAN OF LA MANCHA, Monostatos in DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE, Alfred in DIE FLEDERMAUS , Brigella and Tanzmeister in ARIADNE AUF NAXOS, Njegus in THE MERRY WIDOW, The four Servants in LES CONTES D’HOFFMANN, and Goro in MADAMA BUTTERFLY . He is and has been a frequent guest with companies across North America including L’Opera de Montreal, San Francisco Opera, New York City Opera, Baltimore Opera, Florida Grand Opera, Vancouver Opera, Florentine Opera, Michigan Opera Theater, Arizona Opera, Palm Beach Opera, Nashville Opera and Opera Carolina. As Sam Kaplin and Daniel Buchanan in the acclaimed production of STREET SCENE, which was televised worldwide, Mr. Anthony made his European debut with Theater im Pfalzbau in Ludwigshafen, Germany, with subsequent performances in Berlin at Theater des Westens. Other television appearances include broadcasts of AN EVENING OF GILBERT AND SULLIVAN with the Boston Pops, and the world premiere of Robert Greenleaf’s UNDER THE ARBOR, both on PBS. Mr. Anthony recently and most notably performed as Mime in DAS RHEINGOLD with the Indianapolis Opera and Symphony, Spoletta in TOSCA with Baltimore Opera, Goro in MADAMA BUTTERFLY, Lutz in STUDENT PRINCE, and a production of L’ENFANT ET LES SORTILÈGE as Teapot, Tree Frog, and the Old Man with The Nashville Opera, L’Imperator Altum in TURANDOT at San Francisco Opera, Puck in A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM with the Princeton Festival, Utah Symphony & Opera, Florentine Opera, and as a guest artist at Yale School of Music, Curley in OF MICE AND MEN with Vancouver Opera, Arizona Opera, and Orlando Opera, the servants in LES CONTES D’HOFFMANN with Palm Beach Opera, Virginia Opera, and Orlando Opera, Edmundo, Dance Master, and the Lamplighter in MANON LESCAUT also with Palm Beach Opera, Howard Boucher in DEAN MAN WALKING with Michigan Opera Theater, Valzacchi in DER ROSENKAVALIER with Opera Carolina, Voltaire, Pangloss, and the Governor in CANDIDE and Pedrillo in DIE ENTFÜHRUNG AUS DEM SERAIL with Lake George Opera, 1st Officer/Sandy in Peter Maxwell Davies THE LIGHTHOUSE in Nashville, Nick in LA FANCIULLA DEL WEST with Florida Grand Opera, Monstatos in DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE with New York City Opera, Opera Carolina, New Orleans Opera, and Michigan Opera Theater, Bardolfo in FALSTAFF with Opera Omaha, New Orleans Opera, Opera Carolina and Florentine Opera, Pong in TURANDOT with Nashville, Opera Omaha, Orlando Opera, Columbus Opera, and Indianapolis Opera.
